NZ Employers are looking for these essential employability skills
It’s no secret that New Zealand has a massive drive to find skilled workers to rebuild the economy after the effects of the pandemic. They are looking for people qualified and experienced in teaching, education, medical care, construction, and engineering, to name a few.
But if you rely only on your hard skills to land a job, you might be in for a surprise. Yes, hard, technical skills are needed to get the job done, but soft skills are required to create a company culture where people like coming to work.
And nobody understands and encourages this more than the New Zealanders – mainly due to the country’s widespread belief in having a good work-life balance. They also don’t believe in a “look over your shoulder” way of working – they want to employ people with a strong work ethic and self-management skills.
Two well-known recruitment companies listed the following as “essential employability skills”:
- Careers.gov.nz: Teamwork, Communication, Problem-solving, Self-management, Willingness to Learn, Positive Attitude, Decision Making, and Resilience
- Hays Recruitment: Teamwork, Communication, Problem-solving, Work Ethic, Adaptability, Attention to Detail, Critical Thinking, Time Management, EQ, and Interpersonal Skills.
